Better Food Packaging and Packaging Solutions (PAPPA)
How are food companies in South Ostrobothnia responding to the packaging transition?
Food packaging is changing rapidly, and this shift directly affects food SMEs and food-processing farms in South Ostrobothnia. The new EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), together with extended producer responsibility, brings new requirements but also opportunities to develop packaging that is more sustainable, functional, and competitive.
Through the EU co-funded Better Packages and Packaging Solutions project (PAPPA), companies receive practical support in understanding what these changes mean in practice and how to prepare for them in time.
The project helps businesses
- identify their packaging development needs,
- make more sustainable and well-informed packaging decisions, and
- develop packaging step by step as part of their business.
In the Better Packages and Packaging Solutions project (PAPPA), co-funded by the European Union, we help companies understand what changing packaging regulation means in practice and how to prepare for it in time. The project maps companies’ packaging development needs, organizes discussion events and workshops, and compiles up-to-date information into an easily usable format.
The aim is to strengthen companies’ expertise and support sound packaging decisions so that packaging meets future requirements, supports product quality and shelf life, and also serves business needs and sustainability communication. As a result of the project, a practical electronic checklist to support sustainable packaging will also be produced.
Through the Better Packages and Packaging Solutions project (PAPPA), we help SMEs in the food sector and food-processing farms in South Ostrobothnia understand what changing packaging requirements mean in practice. The aim is to make packaging-related changes clearer and easier to manage in everyday business operations. The project also involves Lakeuden Etappi, which brings expertise related to the recyclability of packaging and waste management.
The project will be carried out in the South Ostrobothnia region from 1 April 2026 to 30 June 2027. It is co-funded by the European Union and has received EU rural development funding from the South Ostrobothnia Economic Development Centre. The total project budget is EUR 148,055.57, of which the EU contribution is EUR 118,444.46. The project manager is Elina Huhta.
Join us in developing more sustainable and functional packaging solutions and in strengthening the sustainable renewal of the food sector in South Ostrobothnia.
